Short Notice Removals in Essex: How It Works
Sometimes a move cannot wait. A chain completes faster than expected, a tenancy ends early, or a delayed sale suddenly goes through. Weston & Edwards East Anglia is a Colchester-based removals company covering Essex and Suffolk, and we take on short notice moves where crews and vehicles are available. This guide explains how last minute booking works, what realistically affects availability, and how to get moving quickly. Book a free survey or call 01206 984866.
Can you really move at short notice?
Often, yes, but it depends on the day and the job. Availability comes down to whether a suitable crew and vehicle are free for your date, the size of your move, and the distance. Midweek and mid-month dates are easier to fill at short notice. Fridays, month-end, and the summer are the busiest windows and go first, so a short notice move on those dates is harder to place. The single biggest factor is how quickly you get in touch, because we can only offer a slot that is still open.
We will be straight with you. If we can do your date, we will confirm it in writing. If we cannot, we will tell you rather than leave you waiting.
How short notice booking works
The process is the same as a planned move, just compressed:
- Get in touch with the key details. Your moving date, both addresses, and roughly what needs moving. This tells us straight away whether a slot is realistic.
- Fast survey. For short notice moves a video survey is usually quickest, as there is no wait for a home visit.
- Written quote. You receive a clear, no-obligation quote covering crew, vehicle, packing, and any storage.
- Confirm and book. Once you accept, we lock in the crew and vehicle for your date.
What speeds your quote up
A short notice move lives or dies on how fast the quote is turned around. You can help it along:
- Choose a video survey. A walk round on your phone lets us quote without booking a home visit first.
- Have your inventory ready. A rough room-by-room list of larger items and anything fragile or unusual.
- Show the access. Quick clips of parking, stairs, lifts, and any narrow lanes at both ends.
- Be flexible on the date if you can. Even a day either way widens what we can offer.

Storage: the pressure valve for a broken chain
Short notice moves and broken chains often go together. If your completion collapses on the day, or your sale goes through before the new place is ready, storage takes the pressure off. Your belongings are packed and held securely, then delivered once you have the keys, so you are not forced to rush both ends into the same day.
It works the other way too. If you need to be out quickly but cannot move in yet, we can move you into storage now and deliver later. And because we do not charge waiting fees, a late key handover on the day does not add cost while everyone waits.
What affects short notice availability
To set expectations, the main things that decide whether a last minute move can happen are:
- Timing. Off-peak dates are far easier than month-end, Fridays, or summer.
- Size of the move. A small flat is quicker to slot in than a large family home.
- Distance. A local Essex or Suffolk move is easier at short notice than a long-distance relocation.
- Packing. If you need full packing as well, that adds crew time to find.
- Access. Difficult parking or stairs at either end can affect which crew and vehicle are needed.
None of these rule a short notice move out. They just shape what we can offer, which is why an early call helps.
